THE JOURNEY
5 StopsJourney
Bob McKillop brought Gibbs back to Davidson in August 2021 as director of student-athlete development. He now serves on Matt McKillop’s staff as assistant coach and director of operations, working with players and supporting the daily needs of the men’s basketball program. During his time on staff, Davidson won the 2022 Atlantic 10 regular-season title and reached the NCAA Tournament, then returned to postseason play in the 2026 NIT.
After a brief stop in Spain, Gibbs joined Salon Vilpas in January 2019. Vilpas was leading the Korisliiga, Finland’s top men’s basketball league, when he arrived. Gibbs averaged 15.5 points per game and helped the club win its first Finnish Cup, a separate tournament from the league championship. He scored 31 points in the Cup final, then hit a last-second three to win a Korisliiga playoff semifinal game against Kouvot.
After playing for the Minnesota Timberwolves in NBA Summer League, Jack signed with Spirou Charleroi in July 2017. His first professional season took him to Belgium, where he averaged 13.6 points in 27 league games and shot 45.2 percent from three-point range. He also started eight FIBA Europe Cup games and shot 47.6 percent from three in the Belgian league playoffs. Gibbs carried his scoring touch into a new country and a different style of basketball.
Gibbs arrived at Davidson in 2013 as a freshman playing behind senior guard Tom Droney and earned Southern Conference All-Freshman honors. He broke through the next season, earning second-team All-Atlantic 10 recognition as Davidson won the league’s regular-season title and received its first at-large NCAA Tournament bid. As a junior, he averaged 23.5 points per game, ranked sixth nationally in scoring and scored a career-high 43 against UMass. He earned first-team All-A-10 honors in each of his final two seasons and finished his Davidson career with over 2,000 points.

Mission
Gibbs returned to Davidson in 2021 because he wanted to give back to the college and help its basketball program. He brings his experience as a Davidson guard and a professional player in Belgium and Finland to his work with today's Wildcats.
Leadership
As a Davidson senior, Gibbs paid attention to what younger teammates saw in practice. He said that if the veterans took a rep off, others might think that was acceptable, so he pushed his group to play hard and play smart. Peyton Aldridge remembered another part of his leadership: Gibbs’s smile was contagious, and he was a joy to play alongside. Gibbs later worked with high school players in Columbus before returning to Davidson in a player development role. He now helps lead the Wildcats from the bench, bringing both the standards and the energy his teammates knew on the court.
Cultural Impact
Davidson kept recruiting Gibbs after he tore his ACL in high school. He went on to captain the Wildcats, score more than 2,000 points and play professionally in Belgium and Finland. When his playing career ended, he returned to the program that had stood by him. Now, when a player is dealing with an injury, pressure or uncertainty about what comes next, Gibbs can speak from experience.
Recognition
Bob McKillop made Jack Gibbs a team captain as a sophomore at Davidson. Gibbs became known for his scoring, including a 41-point night at Charlotte with Stephen Curry watching courtside, but McKillop also valued the way he directed teammates and did the work between highlights.
Gibbs returned home to Columbus in 2020 to recover from a hamstring injury and began training high school players. He still planned to play again, but those workouts gave him his first taste of coaching. A year later, Davidson brought him back in a player development role, giving him the chance to work with players in the program where he had learned to lead. He now coaches alongside Matt McKillop, who first recruited him out of Westerville North.
